At an event held themed, “Implementation of Exploratory Dialogue of the United Nations Food Systems Summit in the South-West Geopolitical Zone,” the Lagos State Government revealed that it has completed its five-year agricultural master plan to boost food production in the State.

According to the Governor, “The State has completed its five-year Agricultural master plan which would be raising its capacity to be a key player in agricultural production while also creating a marketing platform for the export of local agro-allied products and improving food security.”

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu was ably represented by Mr. Sam Egube, the Honourable Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, and he affirmed that the State Government was “putting in optimum efforts to ensure that the present administration did everything within its power to support the agricultural sector and promote a sustainable food system.”

“In a bid to also ensure that we maximize the opportunities inherent in the Agricultural sector, we have also put in place the Lagos Aquatic Centre of Excellence (LACE), which is a fish-processing center capable of stimulating our fish capacity production from 20% to over 60%. This will help our people have access to more healthy and nutritious food content and increase the potential of the aquatic sector in the nation,” He added.

He emphasized fact that rice would always be an important staple food in Nigeria, and with the 52-tonne per hour rice mill in Ikorodu near completion, food security will be enhanced in the State. According to the Governor, the State Government has also introduced several Agripreneurship Programmes, such as the one established at Avia-Igboorosun, Badagry. These programmes will not only expose youths to the agricultural business, but it will also train them in the business of agriculture, encouraging them to come up with new innovations. This will ultimately improve efforts along the agriculture value chain within Lagos State and the country at large.
