Lekki Shooting: Lagos Governor Clarifies String of Events

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu explains the real events leading to the Lekki shooting and implores Nigerians to refrain from posting unverified information. Following images that circulated on social media showing men removing cameras and the claims that ensued as a result of it, the Governor explained that there was no order for the lights to be turned off.

 

“Nobody ordered the removal of the cctv cameras. Management of the toll plaza had said to me that because of the curfew that was announced they took a decision that they will take out installations that are critical to them.”

 

He further emphasized that “the verifiable truth is that the security cameras cannot be touched, are intact and will be used by the panel investigating the shooting.” He added that contrary to popular belief, the cameras seen removed were not security cameras, but laser cameras, available for vehicles to pick up tags and to keep record of the number plates of the cars approaching the toll gate.

 

“The cameras that were pulled off were a decision that the local personnel of the company took in conjunction with the management of the company. The security cameras are still intact and these are things that we can leave open for citizens to come and verify,” he said.

 

In the same interview with Arise TV, the governor also explained that is still yet to discover who made the order for military men to be deployed to the Lekki Toll. “It is imperative to explain that no sitting governor controls the rules of engagement of the army. I have nevertheless instructed an investigation into the ordered and the adopted rules of engagement employed by the officers and men of the Nigerian Army deployed to the Lekki Toll Gate.” He also explained that he is working on ensuring that the #5for5 reforms demanded for are being met, adding that Nigeria will come out of this bigger and better.
